Got this searun a few weeks back. Best of the season for me so far.

The Sustains are beautiful reels. I bought the 10000 for topwater kings and have put it on one of the new t curve ocea popper rods. Such a light combo and I can’t wait to load it up.

I’ve seen plenty of salmon caught but never seen one released. I’m sure it happens coz plenty of people say they do it so one day I’ll see it happen im sure. I only get one or two a season despite many hundreds of hours trying but the way I see it I have a lot of years to perfect the art of enticing more hits. When I do I’ll consider letting a few go.

Checked out the Rakaia south side this morning. No salmon seen between the three mouths and up to the first hole. Got a good kahawai in the southern-most gut which took 10 minutes to land on the trout gear. Thought for a second I was into a salmon !

22g or 28g zeddie will do the trick. Cast up river on a 45 deg angle and vary the sink time on each retrieve. The fish aren’t always on the bottom at Mackies. Depending on the tide and river flow you might need to adjust your casting angle to suit the current.

The rivers might be up for a while. Wonder what they do with the effluent usually spread on the paddocks ?

Anyone got any goals set for this year ? I wanna crack the 20lb mark. 15lb is my best fish to date.

Spent from 11.30 til 3.30 at Mackies, saw 1 landed and 1 lost on the point and 1 from a boat straight off the point. Went up below the bridges for a look and spotted fish sitting in a deep hole. There was one pair which were quite large and most likely salmon but hard to keep up with them to get a good look.

Took the boat out to Mackies tonight. Fished from 6.45 til about 7.45. Saw some fish but no takers between the 3 of us so went up river and did some spins in the jet boat to kill my boredom

Cheers for the update HIPP, might go for a look tomorrow evening, probably not as far up as you fish tho.

A nice 15lber my mate got from Mackies last Sunday. I got fed up not catching anything so we went for a hoon up river and found some quiet water to park up to get a pic and clean the fish.
