ParticipantI caught a small rainbow trout trolling a rapala-like storm hard bodied lure [ they are cheaper better casting and just as good as a rapala! I wouls deffinitly reccomend these lures; picture to follow] in a small dingy.
Great fighting little guy, weighed 2lb, was unfortunatly hooked in multiple places and the only way to get the lure of would have been to rip off its jaw so had to keep him, will make a great dinner tomorrow night though.09/11/2008 at 11:25 pm #11630gunnercoops
ParticipantJust had a weekend fishing the canals, and benmore.plenty of small salmon and the odd trout, a lovely rainbow from Benmore the best.
Saw some good browns in the shallows, but very well educated and ignored my offerings!10/11/2008 at 4:43 am #11634fishsnatcher

ParticipantWhen trout fishing in a dingy today, spinning close to shore not trolling saw a wee school of 3-4 fish all in the 2-5 pound margin. All rainbows in great condition but got spooked when we came close in the boat, we also saw 3 large eels the largest of which was 5ft long.

ParticipantCaught 2.5 lb rainbow trout, a rainbow troutlet about 20cm long, and got an estimated 4lb fish on but was [I believe] foul hooked, and it busted off.

ParticipantWent down to Tomahawk lagoon was absolutely horrible weather 18km an hour wind, drizzle, freezing cold, yet saw fish cruising and between me and my mate we got 6 fish on, but for some reason only got 3 landed, [i then looked at my hook and it was rusty, nowhere near as sharp as i would like!] whihc might explain it,
always check your hooks!
All fish were rainbows between 2-3 lbs
And all caught on the same “lucky” veltec.

Participantanother thing that happeed was my friend tried casting a wooly bigger fly on his spin rod, he casted in the direction of the wind so it took his fly, and he caught a nice 3lb rainbow, to my surprise.

ParticipantWent down to the caitlins on Saturday, did a bit of reconnaissance, found out that it is a good salmon fishing area, and that last year was brilliant with one guy and a couple of mates catching 12 salmon in one day.
Anyway tried a bit of fly-fishing on the Waipati river [don’t know why its called a river its a max of 5 metres wide] saw a school of about 6-7 trout all about 1 and half pound and under.
Nearly got my first fish on the fly-rod but it bit the fly behind the hook, I was just fishing a wooly bugger like it was a bully, unfortuantly that when the fish struck it scared the other fish downstream I kept casting but only got one trout following my fly then nothing, so went home.

ParticipantMy friend caught 3 2.5 lb trout in 8-9 casts of his fly rod, fishing a wooly bugger like a minnow fly pattern, horrible day, cold, wind about 15kph, I caught a 15cm trout on a veltec, as im horrible at fly fishing in rough winds.
