Marco Salewsky caught this very unusual fish from the wharf in Port Charles on the Coromandel. It measured 1.80 meters. Marco caught it on 31 October 2015. Congratulations Marco - I think! This is a rare and unusual catch in New Zealand waters. The fish is a sand snake-eel, Ophisurus serpens, which is an eel of the genus Ophisurus. Snake eels are usually found buried in the sea bottom sand and sediments with just their eyes and part of the mouth visible. They can grow to over 2.5m but even really long ones are usually less than 50mm (2 inches) in diameter.

Dwayne Aberhart with an even bigger rig shark caught surfcasting near Christchurch in December 2016. It weighed in at a massive 41 lbs. Congratulations Dwayne. I haven’t seen a rig shark that big before.

Bryce Helms 41lb brown trout. The monster brown trout, was caught in one of the Twizel Canals by Bryce Helms in the South Island’s MacKenzie Country. It tipped the scales at 19.05kg. That was just 50 grams short of the world record.
