    • Bluefin Tuna – First Tuna Fishing Expedition to the Fiordland Sounds

    The first tuna fishing expedition into Fiordland’s remote Sounds took place in April 1962, marking the beginning of New Zealand’s southern bluefin tuna adventures. Led by Ken Hay and his crew aboard Miss Akaroa, the team landed 17 hard-fighting bluefin, proving the species’ presence in these deep, isolated waters. Since then, Fiordland has remained a challenging but rewarding fishery, where anglers still encounter powerful bluefin among the rugged sounds. Today, strict bag limits and conservation measures protect this prized game fish for future generations.

    My initial excitement saw me predicting 10lbs plus, however, the scales said 8lb even. Still, I let out a whoop and a holler and allowed myself a celebratory cigarette.
