fished off Rocks road Nelson today, Lost a snapper right at the edge at the fishing platform Then brought out the UL spinning gear and had some fun catching Wrasse and giant Spotties got about 30 before a big stingray came and scared them all way.14/04/2013 at 10:39 pm #23358
I caught a conger eel of that Rocks Road fishing flatform about three days ago. There are a lot of snags in front of it. I saw many people loose their sinkers!15/04/2013 at 3:09 am #23359
Yeah there is lots snags right along rocks road, I use stones for sinkers off there and tie them on with light line so I can break them off when I hook up with a fish or bring my line in. its not as bad if you keep your casts short though.
Fished there again today and got a few wrasse and a small kahawai on softbaits. then hooked up with something big on a big chunk of mullet but ended up getting run into the snags15/04/2013 at 3:47 am #23360
Also tried Kina Beach, the Back Beach and Mapua Wharf. No good on those beaches but caught a legal snapper off the Mapua Wharf. How have you guys done surfcasting around Nelson. It looks to me like the beaches are quite shallow compared with Kaikoura, for example.15/04/2013 at 4:58 am #23361
The better fishing around Nelson is in the channels where the water is deeper. The blind channel that runs behind the airport and along the Back Beach is good fishing at low tide as is kina peninsula.15/04/2013 at 10:49 am #23364fishforpotParticipant
Fish Kaikoura today ..
Conditions were perfect …slight sea , nice and clean …
Caught 1 skate , 1 small schoolie , 1 carpet shark and around 30 doggies …got bitten off by something large tho
My mate took his compressed air cannon , he uses it to cast anywhere up to 250mtrs with a single bait …
Anyways , he’s shot the bait out around 200 – and is busy farting about with his other rod when the shit hit the fan ….
A bloody dolphin got tangled in the line on the cannoned rod ….and it went ape shit spastic …wasnt a hectors
The silly prick had forgotten to set the bait feeder/secondary drag , and learnt real quicklike that the main drag should never be set tight …
It tore his rod and rod holder “a fencing standard wedged at least 18inches into the sand” right out of the ground , and the rod went flying towards the sea …
The dolphin must have run wide , then along the beach cause the rod stopped momentarily and my mate reached for it , only to see it take off again ….this happened several times and reminded me of a child reaching for a $5 note being pulled by a fishing line …
He finally grabbed the butt just as the rod went into the channel …luckily the wave was receeding as this all happened ..
The 80lb braid snapped as he grabbed the rod – just coincidence tho ….it could very easily have pulled him into the sea and seen him jet skiing lol ..
The dolphin proceeded to go completely crazy at this point …doing about 60mile an hour , air bourne half the time as it tore across the ocean heading north ..it’s mate was mimicking it , almost like taking the piss ..
It was one of the funniest things Ive seen for like ever ….16/04/2013 at 3:15 am #23366DuckmanParticipant
