Got a good rig at Wakanui today but had to give up because hundreds of shags were coming in from a storm at sea and were flying into my lines.

Got two rig on Sunday south of Ashburton.
First one was at medium distance and the other way out. Also got bitten off on the way out rod. I use a snood of double (side by side) 80lb nylon so that anything big can bite it off as I only fish for rig and ele.

Caught 4 rig last sunday just south of Ashburton. The first was about 500cm so put it back second was a keeper third was the biggest for about 4 years and the last was a keeper.

On rough days I have had to cast from the carpark and still caught some good fish. Big swells are not much good for eles but rig seem to like these conditions.

Got two rig at wakanui this morning. The first one was the biggest that I have caught this season. Sounds like conditions yesterday would have been even better than today but I cant fish every day. Was holding bottom with no drift with 5oz storm sinkers.

The main purpose of a surf rod is to get the bait out there as far as possible. Bite detection does not come into it as a good fish from the canterbury beaches will bend a rod over so far while its in the rodstand that there is no mistaking that you have a fish. Been out twice without getting anything worth keeping but was able to fill in half the day watching a longliner about a mile out pull in fish after fish after fish after fish on and on and on……..
