ParticipantLarge doggies have been all I’ve caught lately, had an epic battle with a large skate at governors bay but ended up cutting it off as I’d neglected to take the gaff with me and didn’t fancy trying to grab it by hand.
Unfortunately have had too much other stuff to do to get much fishing in.25/03/2007 at 12:37 pm #7789yellowfin
ParticipantWent to the pier last night.
Got 3 or 4 small school shark, 2 tiny dogfish and then 1 biggish one.
Just had squid and some mackeral for bait, tried for a mullet but nothing to be seen there.
Cheers

Participantwhat size hooks were you using for the rig and elephant fish?
30/03/2007 at 1:45 pm #7800yellowfin
Participant3/0 mustad demon circle main hook and 1/0 wasabi keeper, rigged the prawns tail up with the large hook through the body and head and keeper though the tail, all nicely bound on with garys bait elastic (if you don’t have some of this I highly recommend it, available via tackle tactics)

ParticipantI will have to try that out. I havnt really been using keeper hooks on all my rigs and at wakanui i tried using 3/0 but i kept getting heaps of small dogfish so all i could do was change to bigger hooks but then i just got heaps of big dogfish. The school sharks seem to be getting smaller and

ParticipantJust went with my friend to his yacht in lyttleton marina, thought I’d catch some bait fish for a red cod mission to Akaroa next weekend. Got 3 herrings, 1 smallish Kaiwhai (not big but not tiny), a spottie and 4 little dogfish. Put the dogfish back but kept the rest. Not bad for relaxing inside a boat, I wasn’t sure if there would be much there but you gotta try eh.
Atleast it’s a start, might go back tomorrow and get some more to have enough in stock.
Cheers
