Haven’t got anything very recently, last I got were those mullet at the mouth of the Opihi on a 10 gram Z spinner about a month or so ago.
Hoping to do some fishing this coming weekend, will report back then!

Im planning on going up to timaru sometime soon to do some fishing.21/03/2007 at 4:10 pm #7784
Large doggies have been all I’ve caught lately, had an epic battle with a large skate at governors bay but ended up cutting it off as I’d neglected to take the gaff with me and didn’t fancy trying to grab it by hand.
Unfortunately have had too much other stuff to do to get much fishing in.25/03/2007 at 12:37 pm #7789
Went to the pier last night.
Got 3 or 4 small school shark, 2 tiny dogfish and then 1 biggish one.
Just had squid and some mackeral for bait, tried for a mullet but nothing to be seen there.

They were pretty small school sharks, 20 to 30cm. I put them back.25/03/2007 at 12:44 pm #7792
All i got at the peir last night was a few large dogfish and a couple small ones and a couple small school sharks and one of about 70cm. One guy got a couple of barracouta and thats all that was caught.29/03/2007 at 8:57 pm #7797
Got a rig and an ele (elephant fish not eel) today at wakanui, the rig was caught on a pulley rig and the elephant on a sliding ledger rig. both fish about 5 pounds. and both caught on a cooked king prawn!!29/03/2007 at 9:32 pm #7798
Sounds good. I havnt fished there for a week now but last time i was there i jost got heaps of small dogfish and there were just so many of them i left after an hour. And thats why i was geting mixed up with ele an eel i thought it was just a typo. Im going down to timaru on saturday so hopefully i will catching something more than dogfish, was hoping to29/03/2007 at 9:35 pm #7799
what size hooks were you using for the rig and elephant fish?30/03/2007 at 1:45 pm #7800
3/0 mustad demon circle main hook and 1/0 wasabi keeper, rigged the prawns tail up with the large hook through the body and head and keeper though the tail, all nicely bound on with garys bait elastic (if you don’t have some of this I highly recommend it, available via tackle tactics)30/03/2007 at 3:45 pm #7801
I will have to try that out. I havnt really been using keeper hooks on all my rigs and at wakanui i tried using 3/0 but i kept getting heaps of small dogfish so all i could do was change to bigger hooks but then i just got heaps of big dogfish. The school sharks seem to be getting smaller and30/03/2007 at 3:48 pm #7802
Just went with my friend to his yacht in lyttleton marina, thought I’d catch some bait fish for a red cod mission to Akaroa next weekend. Got 3 herrings, 1 smallish Kaiwhai (not big but not tiny), a spottie and 4 little dogfish. Put the dogfish back but kept the rest. Not bad for relaxing inside a boat, I wasn’t sure if there would be much there but you gotta try eh.
Atleast it’s a start, might go back tomorrow and get some more to have enough in stock.
