have seen a few large ones caught at macintoshs around the 6to7lb size. more fresh run salmon though some of these fish have extra condition on them from staying at sea longer. they are not mucking still have sea lice on them. always a late run of fish when easter is at the end of april. obviously tied to the cycle of the moon and sun.

been having a constant number of fresh fish moving up the river this week, is the biggest run of april fish I have seen in the 23years of fishing the mak. these late seasons
only appear to happen when easter is at the end of april.

Is there still any salmon around in the waimak and/or kaiapoi river…..Is it still worth a fish??? Also has the Hurunui river had much salmon this season…is there still salmon there???

Think you can only fish for Salmon below Williams st bridgein the poi as of 1st April. Not sure about the tidal reaches of the mak, dropped one up downs Rd yesterday, would say this latest fresh will see them all through…

still a few around often there is a small run of fresh fish in may and the hatcheries are still getting fish. think you need to pick your days. next weekend is not a good one usually a lot of lead or I should say steel shot flying around.

a group of salmon anglers today fin clipped 30,000 smolt at the silverstream hatchery for release from there in june ,also separated the hens and jacks that have so far returned 18 were ready and were stripped. numbers are good.

another day stripping fish at silverstream 24 today to add to the 99 done on Monday and another 55 still left will be there again next Monday. Montrose has had an excellent return with 500 fish there and from what I’ve been told the rangi has had about a 1000. seems like the salmon have had a good run but some ‘salmon catchers’ haven’t.

stripped another lot today hatchery can’t take anymore eggs has over 1.25 million the most ever, egg planting will start in about 2 weeks. meanwhile the surplus fish are going to be released in various streams and rivers that don’t have spawning salmon in the hope of establishing new spawning areas.

ova planting at the Hurunui-mandamus river on Saturday (7th).looking forward to going to a new area and doing something to enhance it. we have seen that this works as when planting at Hacketts creek there were fresh reeds from returning fish from ova put there 3 years ago.

salmon angler volunteers have now planted between 210,000 -220,000 eyed ova mostly in the Waimak, have put 40,000 in the Hurunui. the Rakaia has had some as well, don’t know numbers for there.

Great job all involved.The salmon anglers assn are putting a lot of effort in.Lets prey that the forecast heavy rain during this coming week does not affect the local and foothill spawning streams and creeks to much.
