ParticipantHey guys,
planning on heading up to nelson for a vacation and do some fishing. Anyone know some good spots to go? I went last year to boulder bank and got a bunch of small snapper but would love to try somewhere for kingis etc too although snapper still ain’t bad

ParticipantNot much in the way of Kingfish around Nelson. You would have to head over to French pass or malbrough sounds to have a decent chance of catching one, having said that its not Impossable to get them around the Nelson area. Ive seen them at The Motueka Fishing platform, Plus hooked and lost one in the moutere Channel.
As for Snapper best spot close to Nelson is the Back beach/Blind Channel. Wasting your time there during the day, But head down there at dusk/Night once all the Dog walkers go home and there is good snapper fishing, fish a couple hours before low tide to a couple of hours after low tide then you will have to leave otherwise you could risk getting trapped by the rising tide.
Other good spots are Ruby bay just fish stright off the beach.
Kina peninsula fish the beach at High tide or the channel at low tide.16/12/2011 at 7:46 pm #19828Miliwolf
ParticipantKingies do cruise up and down the boulder bank, I know they are there when the blue water is in close, uncertain otherwise. They can also be gotten off the rocks around Pepin Island.

ParticipantI was told by a local 2 months ago that there are heaps of kingis around the mussel rafts off mot.You would need a boat as they are 5km offshore. The locals go spearfishing for them but lots get away cos they head straight for the ropes.Try off headlands with good current running and you never know your luck.

The footage on that link was within the last 2 weeks off the boulder bank. They’re definately there.
They get a few trolling up and down the boulder bank as well.Get a good berley trail going and get some kahawai live baits out. Sunrise and sunset. Though gotta wait for all the mud and dirty water to clear up there now.
