The Forum been logging me out as I was trying to post recently, hopefully it does not do so this time.
Fished Kaikoura last night and today, the fishing was fairly slow with a Conger caught last night and Red Cod….
This morning started promising with a decent size Moki but then the fishing went dead. Packed up and went home at 9am.
Gotten quite a bit behind in my trip reports. Here is tonight one.
The sea was choppy, the wind was gusty and cold and the fishing was as good as dead, but at least the sunset was pleasant to look at while fishing Cloudy Bay tonight.
Caught a Kingie (Rat) in QC sounds Thursday night. My first caught in the sounds.
Awesome weather up here, spent the day paddling around Port Underwood for approximately 21km. Along the coast was picking up a few Kahawai and Coutta trolling. Tried a couple of different ideas and eventually found where the Kingies were hiding. Had somewhere…[Read more]
This last weekend I went on my first proper fly fishing trip for trout of the Season. I arrived at my mountain tarns to fairly poor conditions, with large clumps of cloud and gusty swift breeze making spotting difficult. First day, was hard going, and the few takes I managed to get were lost due to my over eager strike. The highlight of the day…[Read more]
Tried a spot I often thought about, but never got around to fishing until last night.
Arrived a bit after 7:30 to a cold steady northerly blowing a good chop onto the beach, but was not cold enough to send me home. I quickly realised the beach there was extremely shallow, which left me wishing for lighter line to gain extra casting distance.…[Read more]
Alvey certainly cast well, are durable and have massive line capacity but thats about where their desirability ends.
Penn Spinfisher v has good sealing, and probably fairly durable but its still a mid range reel. Also from memory it does not have a long cast spool.
The Penn Z series is probably the most durable reel they make, its comparable…[Read more]
Fished one of my Snapper spots last night until 11:15pm, fishing was quite slow with a good size Pannie after dark and a couple of small eagle rays which got my hopes up for a few moments. Then I grabbed a few hours sleep and went for a Kayak in the morning but bed was to comfy and I was still tired when I launched so missed the prime change of…[Read more]
I have not been to go Surfcasting lately, mostly been out paddling my kayaks or taking photos. Done a little fishing at the local river mouths for Kahawai, and put very little effort into a Moki fish one night (Saw a little blue penguin in the surf zone, so spent much of the evening watching it instead, hoping for a photo).
My Kayak trips are…[Read more]
Have speared them before, but first caught on a rod. They would of been around 50cm, so a bit smaller then the typical Kahawai I was also catching. Try and wind in your lure as quickly as possible, try and out speed the Kahawai and it should give the Rats a chance to grab the lure.
Went down to Kaikoura this morning, drifted through the work ups and caught plenty of large Kahawai and two Rat Kingfish. Deep down was quite a few snakes also. A school of 7-8 Rats chased a lure right to my kayak where I saw one grab the lure and the rest zoomed off underneath. Was fun until the southerly hit.
Took the The fiery ginga to a little spot I sometime fish in Tennyson inlet on Sunday, was a long day. Picked him up around 7:30, and started fishing shortly after 10am. The weather was mixed, warm morning which turned to rain, and after we were soaked it slowly cleared to a perfect evening. The fishing was rather slow, with only Kahawai,…[Read more]
I had pancakes for breakfast, then around 11pm got to open my pressies. Got a Stoney creek shirt which is a touch to small and a Under Amour shirt which is a good fit. Also the normal chocolates and other gimmicky presents. Then ate way to much Christmas dinner (its impossible to eat to much Christmas dinner). So would digest for a while then…[Read more]
