The whitebait season on the east coast of the South Island seems to have started slowly according to most accounts. The season started on 15 August but so far has failed to fire! Most whitebaiters I spoke to, and observed, at the mouth of the Waimakariri River are catching only a few with each lift. Generally the season starts slowly and peaks just before it ends in November – Yellowfin
