Hi guys. Has anyone had any luck catching searun trout in these rivers? I have heard of a few catching them in the mouth of the Mataura, but not the other ones. I live in Invercargill, and VERY keen to chase after them. I like to fly fish, but have no problems thread lining for them. Do the searuns move up and down the river chasing smelt/silveries? I understand they come in to feed but how far do they move up, etc. Any help would be great. Just trying to crack the nut on this one. Thanks for any help.
As a general rule I’d say any medium to large south island trout river that flows into the sea will have sea runs present. During spring and early summer concentrating angling effort on the lower river and tidal reaches is probably the safest option as this is where baitfish will be more readily available to the trout, then as the summer moves into autumn, the fish move upstream on their spawning migration and may be found many miles from the ocean.
