ParticipantBeen years since Ive bothered chasing “puss” cod as we used to call them ….
Id try nearer river mouths , they come into the shallows to feed on dusk and into the night ….cast into the back of the breaking wave …thats where they feed most

ParticipantThey take most baits but salted bonito and squid has worked for me when I haven’t had access to fresh baits like yellow eyed mullet.

Participantone night years ago my mate and I caught a large red cod each at the Wanganui river mouth near Imlay meatworks..they were big long and fat…when he gutted his he found a cod the same size inside it..When I gutted mine I found a small kitten inside..Red cod will often swallow anything…
