Herbertville/Porangahau/Akitio Surfcasting spots

    I’m just getting back into surfcasting and am looking for some tips on fishing in the Herbertville/Porangahau/Akitio areas. Any good spots? Any access denied areas? What to catch? Baits etc. I used to do a lot of surfcasting in Auckland and all points north, many years ago,

    I would suggest that you ask the same question on the tackle tactics messageboard as there is a lot of hb sufrcasters on there.

    A visit to Herbertville in May 07 yielded just a couple of decent sized Kahawai but the prospects were definately there.

    Thanks vanjack,

    We had a go out at Herbertvile and then Porangahau back in May too, but there was a big sea running with a northerly set at both beaches which made keeping a bait out there pretty hard!
    A local lady at Porangahau who had lived there for nine years said she’d never seen it so rough! So, I can really pick my days ….
    Thanks for the tip about the south end – will check it out (when it gets warmer).

    It was a beautiful blue sky day but with a hard wind at our backs so it wasn’t that bad.
