I believe the deep trench was made by glaciers during a cool period of the earths climate. That trench prevents much of the gravel from getting north of Kaikouria. So south the beaches are gravelly, and north the coastline is rocky for quite a decent.

I suspect there is a good chance of the following being present.
Red Cod
Dog Fish
Small school sharks
Skates
Blue Cod
Moki
Butterfish
