Was wondering if anyone would be interested in a ‘forum’ surfcasting fishing trip in the next couple of months.

Choosing a location which is convenient for everyone would be impossible. But I was thinking that Kaikouria is a good location and quite conveniently located halfway between Blenheim and Canterbury where many of the members are located.

Maybe a beach fish during the day, then move to the wharf at night? I could take my wetsuit and jump in and grab a few paua and other shellfish for bait if conditions suit.

For a date. Maybe the 1st of September (Saturday) would have low tide at 1:33pm and hightide at 7:48pm.

    Although open to suggestions.

I’d be keen, I’m fairly free that weekend, though my sister in law may die

Sounds cool, aslong as I can swap a shift round with my boss it should be ok. He’s generally good with that so yeah…..

I haven’t got a surfcaster right now so may have to buy one, I’ve got an 8ft rod but yeah. Will need to buy a new one I think. There are some fairly good deals out there.

So I’m in and will most likely travel up with Shark_Tale. Date sounds as good as anything I spose.

I’m easy going about where we fish, I suppose the best spot will depend on what the wind and sea are doing. I just hope there are fish around!

Looking at a water depth map of NZ, the sea

I believe the deep trench was made by glaciers during a cool period of the earths climate. That trench prevents much of the gravel from getting north of Kaikouria. So south the beaches are gravelly, and north the coastline is rocky for quite a decent.

    Target species.
I suspect there is a good chance of the following being present.

    Red Cod
    Dog Fish
    Small school sharks
    Skates
    Blue Cod
    Moki
    Butterfish

    Damn….

I only took 1 day of last year to go fishing :(

Plus I worked the previous day which was a holiday.

But I have 7 sickdays (is it 7 we get) that I can use this year.
