Surfcasting along the east coast is a LOT more productive over summer than it is over winter. During winter all you’re likely to get is Dogfish, Red Cod and Skate. Give it a couple months for the water temps to warm up and more desirable fish should start to show up. I’d say you could probably get Blue Cod land based around your area as well, heard of people getting them just south of Timaru.
