Went for fish off the off the rocks near Timaru last night, Had something on but it got snagged on the rocks .I supspect it might have been a carpet shark or small skate. Next time im just going to fish off the beach as its too hard to land anything on the rocks in the dark, even had trouble landing a Dogfish as there is no lights.09/06/2011 at 7:15 am #18291
What sort of prices are they? Dont really want to spend a lot of money as I dont do a huge amount of beach fishing.
Also what sort of length is needed? Is 8m ok for 12ft rod?09/06/2011 at 4:40 am #18289
Yeah there is some massive rays in Caroline bay saw one in the harbour last year would have been at least 60-70kg. Havent really tryed hooking them though as landing them on the rocks would be kinda hard. You would have to fish off the beach.
And yes finding good berley/bait in Timaru is dam hard all you can buy at supermarkets is squid. I have seen bonito at one Fishing shop but it was way to expensive.04/06/2011 at 11:14 pm #18279

Went for a fish down at Timaru yesterday afternoon weather conditions wernt great I got soaked but the sea conditions were the best ive seen for a while(nice and blue ). Had some good bites one bent my rod right over but didnt hook up. Also saw what I belive to be a barracauta jump out of the water.30/04/2011 at 6:44 am #18213
Ive often found the more discoloured the water the more colour brown trout tend to have. Lake opuha is quite discoloured (slight brownish colour) compared to most other Canterbury lakes Which suprises me as the rivers that feeds the lake are super clear. Most of the browns ive taken out of Opuha tend to have very good colouring although the colouring on that fish is the best ive seen for awhile.30/04/2011 at 2:16 am #18211
Nice fish there baitman. When up to lake Opuha for the last day of the season and cought a nice brown around 2.5lb .29/04/2011 at 2:53 am #18207
The seas been to dirty or rough around South Canterbury lately to do any surfcasting. Although I did get out a couple of days ago and all I cought was small dogfish.22/04/2011 at 8:31 am #18189
Hi I was fishing from the shore on the southern side of the lake using natural bait. The lake is rather low at the moment and the fish some of the fish arent in very good conditon although the 2 I cought today were ok.22/04/2011 at 2:51 am #18187
Went up to lake Opuha this morning Cought a couple of small browns around 1lb realesed both of them. Havent seen any of the land locked salmon up there for a while.20/04/2011 at 7:17 am #18181
