Fished Birdlings Flat today from about 3.30 to 6.30, slow at first, only a few doggies and a small schoolie. then, as the sun was setting, the rod doubled over and my sand spike turned into somewhat of a v-shape haha. The cheap reel didn’t give any line, so I rushed over and untightened the brake. Landed a 7’6” sevengiller about20-30 minutes…[Read more]

I’ve read about a billfish who came in green and speared a woman in the boat through one of her implants  Also seen pictures of a marlins bill sticking through the transom of a boat, and another one with two broken off sailfish bills lodged in its head. apparently they found the rest of them in its stomach…

[quote="Miliwolf":74aewql7]Kekerengu might still be producing sevengillers in April…. [/quote:74aewql7]

Ok, thanks. Will add that one to my options. still, the further north the warmer the water and the more sharks, right? as a rule of thumb i mean at that time of year… might even grab a flight to aussie somewhere, if there’s still some money…[Read more]

I spent january up and down the eastcoast of australia, and february in hawaii. brought my two surfcasters, a smaller spinning rod and a 50 lbs big game outfit for the whole trip, but didn’t catch much. was…[Read more]

tried birdlings flat for the first time today. nice place, but didn’t catch much. some doggies and a couple of carpet sharks. mullet and crabs for bait, the crab didn’t get any bites. no schoolies for some reason…

[quote="Miliwolf":3ub633mr] I find that around late March is when the Red Cod return in number and I put my rods away[/quote:3ub633mr]

ok thx. so what do u do from late march then? red cod isn’t very exciting… do u put yr rods away because the bigger fish are gone, or because red cod hit the baits before they get the chance to? and will…[Read more]

will do. i’ll be in aussie in january, and will hopefully hook on to something decent. even bought a 24 kg standup outfit on trademe here the other day, and the largest hook i could find in fisherman’s loft haha. will probably have to rent a kayak or something to deploy the bait, or take it out with a baloon in offshore wind…. I know i’m not…[Read more]
