Been down south for a week did a it of fishing down by some whitebaiters at the waiau river mouth, tried everything, whitebait patterns on fly rod, live smelt, spinning with varius lures, got 5 trout but all under a pound.

A few of river mouths down south if you wanted to target sea runs, the caitlins river and the tidal caitlins lake, clutha mouth, taieri mouth.
All have a good number of browns, that should be hungry for whitebait
I gave my brother a cast with the fly rod last season…. he cast it right in front of a duck and it ate the big black bead head wooly bugger
Catch and release though he waddled off fine this is his brother, he is such a traitor.
Anyone know if any rivers are open near tekapo in the winter? I’m pretty sure they are all closed and it’s just the lakes and another couple of places.
I had heard a rumour, that there was a 1km stretch of the tekapo open….

Me and my mate troutaholic got a 10lb brown each, and a he also got a 4.5lb sea-run/estuary trout.
My brownie was a hen and his was a jack.
All fish were released

Did a bit of spin-fishing at Taieri mouth today, saw a few mullet about and got a few on and lost them. A 3-4lb butter coloured brown followed my lure right to my feet.
Dissappointed I didn’t land anything though…. Looking forward to the whitebait season
