You have a very similar set up to mine. I am running 50lb power pro on a 12ft power play spooled on the AX90. I do a lot of rock fishing for the Kingies with this combo, it would be one of my favourites at the moment.

I totally agree, Alvey reels are tough, mainly due their lack of moving parts. They are very simple inside.
They can handle water in and around them, I have been selling alot to the surf fishing guys because as we all know sometimes you have to get wet!

Mono is short for monofilament, Nylon is the fiber that the line is made of. mono just means it’s a single strand line. Most recreational fisherman call monofilament “Nylon” probly cause in the early days this is what monofilament was marketed as.
In our shop nylon as a fiber is also used in rope for anchoring and clothing etc.

I have had really good success with soft baits when targeting Kingies and Kahawhai. The Berkley Gulp Jerk Shads 5″ and the bigger 7″ on a jig head heavier enough to cast as far as you need to. I am using a 12ft power play rod from Kilwell. Mainly fishing Mt Maunganui beach down to Papamoa. I like to use 5oz Grip and Frees, they are like a break away but they only have one set of anchor wires and wings.
I find the double anchor wires just makes them harder to flip around when trying to retrive,
