ParticipantWhich bay were you thinking of launching from? There’s a lot of quiet roads that end up with beach access which is handy depending on your boat size. Thanks for the quick reply by the way, managed to find a few things to catch up on and save myself a cold! Keep me posted on how you go when you next head out. I’m tempted to camp and fish Okains bay as soon as it warms up a bit

ParticipantIm allergic to boats …..
I fish off the rocks ….take a peek about 2 clicks north of pompeys piller
If you click on the photo , see the knob under the name “Rob” …thats where I fish …off the end , or off the side facing the camera when a southerly first hits …

ParticipantI think he means red bay/shell bay about 15k south from north west bay if you mean the one in okains bay? I havn’t fished either myself but have tried by those pillers out to the left of okains bay heads and had some big hookups.
Looks like a good exposed spot fishforpot. Is there much of a dropoff or are you casting out? I’ve fished from rocks for years and I do enjoy the ground not rocking and swaying!22/09/2010 at 4:46 am #16046fishforpot
ParticipantGoat point …..it is hell exposed ….but on the right day you can fish off the end/top ….or in southerly you can drop down the north face and fish out of the wind with huge swells passing 40-50 feet to the side of you ……
10 yrs ago the fishing was amazing …its just close enough for boats to come from Akaroa tho , and since it appeared on spot X ….its never been the same
In saying that tho , the boats cant get too close …26/09/2010 at 4:51 am #16052151
ParticipantDam that looks like a wicked place. Bit sad it’s outfished a bit considering we don’t have many good rock fishing spots in Canty. Might have to walk that one day. Much walking and easy to get permission if you don’t mind me asking?

Participant10 mins from the 4wd ….5 mins a few years ago when I was fit ….
Farmer is kinda anal ….I caught him on a good day many years , he thought I was kidding ….its mountain goat country …very dangerous , but if you know where to drop over ledged etc its ok ….extremely exposed , as you could imagine …its the end of the world …..in fact he had a German couple visit him and he took them out there ….they had used a string on a map to find the piece of land the FAREST possible from their house ….freaky aye …….
The neighbours were telling me many years ago , they didnt need to pay a TV licence , the TV people had been over there and tested for a signal and found none , what they didnt realise was the farmhouse recieved a signal directly from Wellington on another frequency lmao
Bearing in mind Ive only been there 3-4 times in the last 4 years , before that the farmer “who is an ok sorta guy for the record” used to keep track of our every movement ….we snuck some divers in and he found a few cray legs and hit the roof …found them in the middle of a huge paddock ffs …..
He lives in Takamatua …and youd swear he has cameras everywhere …You would struggle to find a fishable spot …..its snag city +++ …….its extreme fishing …….rewarding if you know what and where and how
With a rope ladder , access to the rocks at the waterline is possible ..
Flick me an email , I’m looking for people to go out there with …hard to get good days but they will come …

ParticipantHeh farmer sounds like a farmer… Guess you get lucky with the friendly ones now and again. Sounds like an easy walk and rocks are a bita fun. I’ve got a few
retired climbing ropes that may give us a hand (still sound for static stuff). I’ll catch up with you after uni’s finished and the holiday jobs sorted then i’ll know
how much time i can hopefully spend fishing! As you say snags suck! so maybe we take some odd cheap bits of metal for weights. I don’t mind loosing (cheap) hooks and line.
The best trivk i find is always send the girlfriend in to see the farmer if shes keen for fishing. They’re not on a boat
so technically it’s not bad luck -
