ParticipantIs there a time of year when sea runners are more likely to move up into a river or is it more a random kinda thing?
Is the presence of whitebailt likely to encourage sea runners up or are you more likely to encounter resident fish?
I am asking these questions in relation to a small Otago river and certainly within the tidal affected area.
Thanks for any light you guys can throw on this.
Oh yeah I saw a monster last night…. He saw me too so we will have to meet some other day

ParticipantSmall Otago river estuary…. I think I know the one you mean
Yeah sea-runs will start coming in from September onward for whitebait, although it can be hard to tell the difference between them and resident estuary fish.
And they come again in Feb-march to spawn up-river, can get some big sea runs in them small Otago rivers, my biggest fish from last season was an 8lb brownie out of an otago estuary. I don’t think it was a sea-run fish, it was quite golden, but very nice condition. It was also one of the few fish I didn’t get a pic of26/08/2010 at 2:35 am #15886yellowfin

ParticipantYeah, I’m keen
I don’t have access to a car though so my fishing options are limited to round Dunedin, though if I’m ever heading up your way, I’ll send you a PM
If your down Dunedin way, either when the season starts or earlier, I chould chip in for petrol and we could hit the Taieri or the waikouaiti?
