Hi guys, I currently live in Invercargill, and I am wondering if any salmon have been seen in the surrounding rivers? I have been down here 5 years now, and never caught a salmon yet. Not even sure they run down here. I do hear of the occasional person talk about catching one, but not sure if it’s another fish story. Thanks guys for help.

Sorry guys, missed one river on the previous post. Has anyone had any luck on the Clutha river? I am heading up there hopefully this weekend.

Southland is not a salmon stronghold mate..the clutha does have a small run which they are trying to improve with hatchery releases at present, but it’s a huge river with few salmon, so the chances are not high. From memory, I believe they catch a few from some dam down that way but which one it is I’m clueless.Canterbury is where it is at when it comes to salmon

They catch a few below the Roxbrough hydro dam although that is in Otago and a fair way from Invercargill.
Tairei mouth is also a good spot but agian that is also in Otago. Ive heard the Wairu river in western Southland is ok not sure if its ok to fish though with the didymo.
