I always seem to hear about fishing near river mouths is good for sea fishing – I love going out Sumner way for other reasons but would fishing from Shag Rock casting out to the deepest point between New Brighton be of any worth? (where the estuary exits to the sea)

And not for tiny herring/spotties

you will allways catch kahawai and the odd flounder ,but lots of herrings,i have heard of the odd rig being caught there,it is also good for searun trout they chase the whitebait, you need to come back just inside the mouth, just where it turns into the estuary, have fun.

With the amount of crap going in there since the eq’s
I’d be worried about catching a mars bar!
it’s probably better to try the river mouths further north.
