Record-breaking rainbow trout could have been caught in Lake Ruataniwha Frank Bluch and his 29-pound rainbow caught flyfishing at the Lake Ruataniwha outlet.
It took him about seven minutes to reel in, and once out of the water Australian angler, Frank Bluch knew he’d caught a whopper fish.
South Canterbury could be home to another world-record catch after Bluch caught the massive rainbow trout on just a 2kg tippet at Lake Ruataniwha earlier this month.
Bluch said the rainbow trout was over 29 pounds (13kg) and was “so big it could barely move”.

Central South Island Fish and Game officer Rhys Adams said although the official process to determine a world record catch was a long one, early indications suggested the fish could be the largest-ever rainbow trout caught with a 2kg tippet.
