wondering if there were trout in the mid-uper reaches of the rakaia. If so, what lure would you use for spinning?

    thanks

Green and gold veltic spinner or try a storm 3″ Swim shad.

Yes there are trout, but its a big river. I have only ever fished the middle Rakaia for Salmon, but on other braided rivers I have found veltic style lures to work very well, cast upstream then retrieve. I like striped orange and black ones.

Also could try Rapala’s or other minnow lures, ones which dive or sink are probably the best option. When the river is clear go for a natural colour, but if its milky then consider going bright.

Rapala’s work well but the small fish love them which just gets annoying.
IMO blue fox vibrax #3 lures are the best thats a big fish lure.
Don’t fish the fastest water not really productive and don’t fish over silt.
If u want to fish the fast water use a 7g zeddy or a 7g or the next size up of ticer black is best.
