Otago University zoology professor says the commercial whitebait take needs cuts
Whitebaiter Jim Fletcher checks out his catch at the Waihopai River in Invercargill on the opening day of the 2019 whitebait season.A scientist believes whitebaiting should be a recreational fishery and a handbrake be put on the commercial take in the future.
The Department of Conservation has put together an Improving Whitebait Management discussion document which proposes changes to whitebaiting in New Zealand.
It includes shortening the season, prohibiting whitebaiting from some rivers for a set period of time, and phasing out equipment including sock nets, trap nets and screens.
