Thanks for inviting me onto the site, I’m coming down from UK in November and have been looking at the various regulations. I’m travelling from the Northland, (Tutukaka)
The fish and game site provides the freshwater regulations for most of New Zealand. The Taupo region is controlled by DOC and the regulations can be found here.
Have received this from Doc offices re Taupo region:
“Single hooks only are allowed and only 1 hook per lure. Be aware that the rivers flowing into Lake Taupo are restricted to flyfishing only though you can spin in the lake as long as you are 300m away from the stream mouths. It does include trolling rigs. However you can fish with up to 3 lures though most trolling rigs are either a single lure,
Since you traveling though Tirau ,You will be be in my area where I live ,contact me and we see if we can set up some fishing in local area if you have time

I have fished the upper reaches of the Buller a few times, I believe its technically in the Nelson region but there is plenty of good water and a couple of nice lakes.
Fished the westcoast itself once, lots of rivers but most do not seem like good trout habitat (could be wrong). There is heaps of water, I suspect it would take a while to figure out how to fish these streams.
Did a little surfcasting but the sea was big the whole time I was there.
