Foul hooked a decent Flounder & landed a large Kahawai at Kairaki yesterday, have been some very big Kahawai caught this long weekend at the mouth, havent seen them for about a month, so nice to have them back in the river, although a great fighting fish, not quite what I was targeting so will be back there again tommorrow thrashing the water lol.

Caught a moderate size mullet while trolling in the lower wairau. Lovely evening with a gentle breeze. About a 7km paddle all up.

Would explore the Wairau Lagoons one day.

Spent from 1am-5pm kayak fishing around the grove arm. It was a incoming-high-out going tide. Fished a combination of different plastic baits. Was calm most of the time, the rain was not to heavy. Only caught a gurnard and the spotties was a pain.

Went fishing up the Waimak george and briefly at Lake Lyndon two weeks back.

Went fishing with a guy from Chile who loves trout fishing but hadn’t been fishing here yet so said I’d take him. The waimak isn’t the most exotic of locations but was somewhere on short notice to go. After his 4th or 5th cast he got a small 1 pound rainbow, on a veltec spinner. Just put back. He landed another really tiny trout not long after. After nothing happened for a while we went to lake Lyndon, the lake was really low. Seems to get lower each year. Give it 4 years and it’ll be dried up! LOL, hmm. I don’t know. Got nothing there so went back to the waimak near the white posts. The chillian guy hooked a trout after 15 min that was more decent, around 2 or 3lb but it spat the hook after a brief fight.

I was using a rapala minow pattern and about 5 min later hooked into a small maybe 1lb rainbow, put back of course. After a while of nothing I walked down the river this time with a veltic spinner and had a fish in a pool. Hooked into something more decent, maybe a 3 or 4lb rainbow. But the old rod (and LINE!) I was using must’ve been no good and the line snapped just after it took the lure. I did get to see it briefly before it went on it’s way. I gave my new trout rod to the other guy and used my old one being a generous person, no more!!! lol. Saw a huge eel go down the river after that, like 1 to 1.5m long. It just looked massive.

No other trout caught that day but since we had got a day license for him he wanted to get the most out of it. We went right down to the mouth at the sea and me using the veltec I hooked about a 1.5 – 2lb kaiwhai. Was an interesting end to the day.

And that’s it! Am looking to trying some more winter trout fishing in the “all year” open areas of perhaps the Hurunui and Waiau, waimak etc.

    Cheers

Been catching a few fish from the Kayak over the last month.

The main two species are Blue Cod and Couta… Fishing has been quite slow. Caught a flounder today from the kayak in the sounds.

    Went fly fishing today.

Went up my secret river and caught a 3.3lb brown trout. A few ponds later landed a nice 6lb brown. Saw about 10 trout in total. Was a pleasant afternoon on the stream.

Went to my “secret fishing spot” on tomahawk lagoon caught a nice 2 pound rainbow trout, then went to another spot caught a 3.5 lb brown in brilliant condition. I put the rainbow back but the brown is now fillets in my fridge. Saw plenty of trout at least 10 rising all over the lagoon at one time.
The rainbow was swiriling with its fin out of the water [probably wishing he was a shark] for about an hour before he finnaly took my rapala.

    Yum :D

Have not done much spearfishing in the last year or so, but decided everything was looking good for a Port Underwood mission. The Port was nearly flat and the visbility was amazing for the area. I probably had 4-5m visbility once in the water, 95% of the time it is less then a meter there.

Paddled out of Ocean Bay and over to a spot I scouted out earlier, Jumped in and started exploring the area, visbility was good but only saw the odd Moki for the first hour or so. Found a few cray holes but could not get any. .

The tide changed around that time and the Butterfish massacare began. Shot 8 butterfish in the end, but saw many more. Easily my best day and did not dive deeper then a meter all day.
