Where you going to set the pot for crabs? Never seen any off the wharfs at Timaru but should be some around caroline bay side. If you can get some crabs or muscles for bait then I think they still get moki off the rocks or wharf at this time of the year.01/07/2010 at 9:05 pm #15678
hi im going to try off the wharf for crabs first, school moki tend to go away in winter just leaving big resident fish, i know tis from putting a net out at the harbour entrace.01/07/2010 at 11:09 pm #15680
I’ve still gotta fix up my crab pot thats still got big holes in it after being attacked by a seven giller off the Kaikoura wharf. The weathers so nice I should really go fishing somewhere.02/07/2010 at 2:56 am #15681

Wasn’t doing anything today so went for a drive up to Timaru. Checked out the wharf first then decided I’d head around to the other side and fish there. Got around there and there’s now a gate blocking you from driving out to the end of the rocks so just ended up going for a walk around and taking some pictures. There’s so many places around Timaru with good spots for fishing just need to wait for summer to try a few.
Some of these places could be worth a try
Fished off the rocks here a year or two ago, can’t remember if I caught much but have been told you can get kahawai here spinning. Not sure how deep the water is off here going straight out to sea but I’d like to try sending a balloon off there and see if there’s any sharks around even if it’s only seven gillers. Do you know if other species such as blue sharks have been caught close to shore in nets etc?
Planned on fishing along this beach a while back but never got around to it, a guy fishing there told me you can get blue cod. Would like to know how deep the water is along this area.
A view of the harbour looking back towards the mountains.
Caroline bay. Fished off the wharf on the right corner of the picture and got yellow eyed mullet and small kahawai. I suppose all along the other side of the bay would be the same sort of fishing. Around this area should be good for stingrays at the right time of the year although there seems to be dogfish everywhere.
The only stingray I ever caught in timaru was off the wharf in the harbour around March so it’s possible they don’t enter the harbour often or are only around in the late months of summer. Can’t remember when I saw in the paper about a 200kg+ stingray that washed up on caroline bay but that’s what I’m after next season.02/07/2010 at 7:50 pm #15685
zac, i dont fish near rocks just target rig ele schoolies, i have put nets out for moki where some of your photos were taken with success ans its quite deep in places too, the road to the beach 1st north of timaru has some nice stingrays i was gonna grab one by the tail once i guy said no way thats where its stings are,its aorangi road.the map you have up says otipua beach about 200 mtrs north of that i have caught rig and schoolies there and an old commercial guy used to tow in there 50 years ago hew new the marks and told me of huge cow eles in there too.the pot i was gven is a cray pot made out of no 8 wire and the workmanship is fantastic im going to cover it with chicken netting today. are you allowed to offer to swap somthing in any forums? thanks03/07/2010 at 5:04 pm #15689
Thanks for the info. You should be allowed to make a topic to swap something. There should really be a buy/sell/trade section on this forum.04/07/2010 at 1:34 am #15690
not allowed to put a crab pot off the wharves unless you hold on to it im patient but not that much, fishing boats have got warp around the prop so fair enuff ill just have to go to plan 2 lol.
