Taking the boys down to the New Brighton Pier this weekened just wondering any tips and what the best bait would be to use there.

I haven’t been down in awhile but I only ever went down during high tide as found water level far too low otherwise. I tend to use yellow eyed mullet or even squid for bait.

You can fish over any tide. I find fishing for yellow eyed mullet is better at low tide or further down in the shallows at high, use pre made sabiki traces or make some up with really small hooks. Pretty much the best bait at the Pier seems to be salted bonito especially for kahawai and you’ll catch pretty much everything else on it. If you can catch mullet and crabs for bait during the day then you can go for schoolies(mullet) and rig (crab) at night. Squid’s also good if it’s all you can get.

Am i likely to catch any elos at the pier? Anyone know tides/baits they have been caught on?
