    Massive non-compliance in fish screens in Canterbury, ECan says

    All 32 fish screens installed in irrigation schemes throughout Canterbury monitored by Environment Canterbury (ECan) were found to be non-compliant.

    Over the past calendar year, ECan checked the 32 sites and made the discovery, a summary of fish screen compliance presented to Monday’s Orari-Temuka-Opihi-Pareora (Otop) zone committee meeting showed.

    A fish screen is required whenever a water take could impact fish. They are designed to protect fish, including trout, salmon and native fish, by keeping them out of water takes.
