then you are in breach of the licence regulations, bait is only allowed in the kaiapoi between 1st of October and 30th of April. I assume you do actually have a licence and have read the restrictions.
Sorry don’t mean to be a bit Anal but the rules are there for a reason.
Cut baits are illegal in all waters at all times and fish caught on them must be released.

    All year All legal methods*

*See section 6 for further restrictions on bait fishing for sports fish.

6.3 Bait fishing for salmon is prohibited except in the:

6.3.1 Kaiapoi River between 1 October and 30 April

    – (delete)

    “Bait” Means:
    …….
Natural fish (excluding fish ova, or any portion of a fish, or shellfish (mollusc).
    …….

I am no lawyer, but it does seem like the part “or any portion of a fish” would exclude cut fish. But then is a whole fish not a whole portion of a fish.

6.1.2 Selwyn River upstream of State Highway 77 bridge where bait fishing is prohibited all year
6.2 Bait fishing for trout is prohibited in the Western zone.

I missed thet word ‘only’. The word ‘only’ should of been between “may bait”, being at the end of the sentence means that the human brain puts low importance on it increaseing the chance of it being skippied. A poor placement of words.

    Hey Miliwolf

good point, however the date range is the important issue really.

Still a nice catch, lucky no rangers about as it could have been and expensive oversight.;)

Hey what line weight are you Mullet fishers using? Wonder if there is a record for them?

crikey! might have to take the 3kg trout spnning set out out and start targeting mullet in the kaiapoi. thats a huge difference in the weight to line ration in the anglers favour.
