I have been told (never tried) that after a strong storm is a good time to try.

I might head out, but I find it hard to get excited about red cod or dogfish. I want to go for a dive (try for a few Butterfish maybe a moki), but have been fighting a weak cold for the last week.

The sea should be the best on the Saterday.

That is the reason i haven’t been fishing for the last month and i don’t plan on going untill maybe late spring when the kahawai and yellow eyed mullet come back. Then i have time to stock up on bait for summer.

I find the best fishing related thing to do during the winter is to make up ‘rigs’ ready for summer. I often find myself ‘short’ of a couple of components that I think I need. I brought the components I need a couple of times then find I am missing a couple more.

I rarely eat KY or Red cod. I might keep a couple of fish to use in pies but the rest get released.

I just find it fun playing them on 6lb line.

Another bad thing i do is replace the line on all of my reels too often, sometimes after ive only used it for a few trips.

I like to buy all of my stuff in Bulk. In saying that I often get a bit worried in ‘buying bulk’ when I do not know the quality of the equipment. For that reason I normally avoid the very cheap ‘hooks’ which often appear on Trademe or in the warehouse (although I believe 1 of the brands of the warehouse hooks are a relabeling of a top US brand). I generally stick to brands I know are good like VMC, Owner, Mustard or Gamakatsu. Recently I manage to get bulk VMC hooks for dirt cheap which I am pleased about.

    Found them in Rebel sports.
It was a pack which contained roughly.
    30 circle 10/0 hooks
    30 classic 10/0 hooks
    15 24kg snap swiels.

all for less then $10. I brought both packs they had in stock. A similar quality hook normally costs around $0.60 each.

I own way to many hooks and other assorted tackle now that I think about it but I would slowly use it, but I would add to my collection faster then I would use it.

Recently against my better judgement I spooled my best reel with a ‘cheap’ mono marketed by Kilwell. I thought ‘it could not be that bad but I was proved wrong. Part of me wants to change it now but I only used it once. The line might improve with use.
