Just got back from amberley, fished 6-10pm, had a couple real good hits and a few nibbles but not much, caught a rather small rig at around 9.30pm which i threw back, was caught on kawahai bait, crabs were untouched, we did manage to land 2 very large crabs tho, :)

    hi…
i dont do much surfcasting but am staying down at the hinds river mouth area !!
since the salmon rivers are flooded i was hoping someone could tell me what can be caught surfcasting around this area ..

Most likely same as the rest of the coastline round here,

Elephant fish and rig very nice to eat,

Cooked prawns or crab legs/bodies for bait, normal ledger rig lower hook usually more succesful, kahawai and mullet at the rivermouths… spin, bait or sabiki with bait for these.

Good luck hope the rivers havent stuffed up the beach water too much, Steve

I would only bother chasing rig in the sea for a few days ……especially anywhere near the river mouths ….they love the dirty water …….crabs for bait …

    thank you …
yes i have used squid before and had little success only catching doggies ..
i like it tho because it stays on the hook..
so prawns sound easy to get hold of ..
i have never caught an ele but hope to ..
    rig sound good …
we are down around the rangitata river mouth
so crabs or prawns for bait ..
would they not just come off the hook …
    ??
and do they need to be cooked
    cheers
