Finally got out to the beach this morning. Got to wakanui just before 7am not long after hooked an ele but lost it in the breakers. Had a few more hits but just wasn’t hooking up. Got another ele before 8am had it right in the breakers when it decided to head back out to sea so I let it run for a while before the hook pulled. Fresh crab baits back out but after half an hour and the baits coming back the same as I casted them out I packed up. Lots of dolphin action just before they stopped biting don’t know if that had anything to do with it, was groups of them right in the breakers and ones jumping clear of the water further out. Not a good start to the season for me nearly the end of december and I’ve hardly been out, I think my last elephant fish and rig were October or early november..
Anyone heard dates for the kaikoura and amberly comps yet?16/12/2010 at 4:09 am #16583
i have never had any fish when dolphins were around i think their sonar signals scare fish away16/12/2010 at 6:47 am #16586
i have caught five big rig at ashworths beach when dolphins have been around16/12/2010 at 7:29 am #16587
Ive usually had good luck when they are around..in fact I look for them and fish close to them..especially when they are feeding..16/12/2010 at 11:01 am #16589
Just got back from Baileys. Managed 2 small rig. My first and Ele and a decent kahawai.
Was a nice night for it.16/12/2010 at 4:26 pm #16590
I would’ve thought the dolphins feeding would attract smaller sharks after they’re gone to feed on anything left over. Doubt they’d have much impact on the eles and rig though since their diets are completely different.
Always wondered why rig are so powerful and fast if all they do is eat crabs off the sea floor, smaller rig put up more of a fight than a schoolie of the same size..16/12/2010 at 6:57 pm #16591
Good on ya vip_ y0…woulda been a great evening..few Kahawai being caught down here on the beach yesterday..one jerk had 5 rods out out and left a mess of half filleted sharks and rubbish..the rubbish wasnt so bad..but 5 rods f…k me dea..d!JH

If I’m with a group we fish 1 rod each if I’m alone I fish 2 one with a cut bait the other with crab or the like.
Or bait on 1 and spin with the other.
whats the best bait for kahawai at the moment?16/12/2010 at 7:08 pm #16593
1-2 rod, typically one set up for something larger, 7 giller etc, the other for eles etc. But mostly fish just one rod.16/12/2010 at 7:28 pm #16594MiliwolfParticipant
Normally fish two or three rods at a time. Trailed 4 rods but a bit to much work. Two Sevengillers on at once it heaps of fun, luckily they rest up after their initial run.
Forecast was for little wind last night, although rain. So went down to the saltworks hoping to catch a few paddle crabs and go for a surfcast. Got to Salty to find weed everywhere and 1m breakers crashing in. Tried the crab pot for 5 minutes but it got filled with crap so changed spot. Went 5 minutes down the beach to Blind River, arrived at 8pm and saw a couple of other guys getting ready for a fish. The conditions were much nicer at Blind river, half meter surf and no weed. Surpising how much conditions can change only a few km up the beach.
Casted two rods out, one with cooked prawn the other with cockle. Rain got heavier. Stopped fishing after landing a red cod around 10:00pm. The other guys hooked two and landed one large Rig using crayfish for bait. Prawns are definitely the poor substitute for Paddle crab and even Cray.16/12/2010 at 10:54 pm #16595
baitman—-The best bait for Kahawai at the moment seems to be the old fav..half or whole yellow eyed mullet..live is the best !cheers
So what do you guys do with the 7 gillers you catch?16/12/2010 at 11:12 pm #16596
