King salmon smolt make a dash for the sea during full moon
30,000 salmon smolt are released at the Silverstream Salmon Hatchery in a bid to support the wild salmon stocks.
A total of 30,000 salmon smolt were released last week from the Silverstream Salmon Hatchery and with close to perfect conditions they made it to the sea in good time.
There, they will feed themselves up along the coastline until they are ready to spawn in the rivers.
Hatchery general manager Karl French said it had been a successful release, timed around full moon and with good water levels which aided their speedy swim to sea.
“They would have been at the estuary that same night, they just bolted. It was a good release.” Click here to read the full article by Emma Dangerfield on Stuff.co.nz 18 August 2017.
