The Halswell River meanders from near the Halswell township down to Lake Ellesmere. It crosses many public and private properties and flows beneath several bridges. Access to the mouth can be had from where the river intersects with Seabridge Road down either bank just south of Motukarara.”
and the trout bible ” South Island Fishing guide” by John Kent.
“the mouth offers night lure fishing, while the middle reaches hold a few small brown trout……….. “
I know its off topic, but if you do not already own a copy “South Island Fishing Guide” is essential to own for any keen trout fisherman. It gives a brief overview of most rivers and is accurate enough to be useful.
ther are also perch and tench in there. years ago the perch were in the world record range and you certainly knew it when they took your trout gear. don’t know the size now but hopefully now that the cleanup has started in a few years we might see trout etc getting back up in size and numbers.
I live close to the halswell river and have fished it in early summer. can be quite difficult fishing the trout spook easily, never managed one on the fly but a small veltic cast down stream past trout seem to produce the best results. I’ve caught small browns maybe the biggest around 2 pound and have caught many carp which are very aggressive and easy to catch.
only ever fished it once near where it goes into Ellesmere, didnt see any fish at all, looks better upstream, but never given it a go. Liam, where about were you getting the carp?
me and a mate mike used to hit that river pritty hard from the golf course up to halswell its self and man theres alot of fish in there make sure you fish under the under cut banks
mind you this is going back 6 or 7 years ago now
good times
On that note i do recall a fair few years ago, there are or were huge goldfish/koi or something in the ponds over the back of the pirates island mini golf course/driving range would be interesting to go back and catch them
in the 70’s fishing the mouth of the selwyn at night you sometimes would find large goldfish swimming around you. they were easily netted. seem to have died out, probably a good thing
