ParticipantThinking of going to Lyttelton tomorrow, never been there and it seems a nice place… Does anyone know if you’re allowed to fish from the breakwater or the wharf because I was reading one of Alan’s article and at the time when he wrote it, the places were closed to the public…
Has anyone been there lately? I heard the place is a pretty good spot to get large rays, besides baitfish, crabs and maybe Red Cod (or do they only show up on winter?). If you’ve ever been there, could you tell me what have you caught?
Cheers
Nicolas

ParticipantZac has done well there, pg13 of latest catches 3, never fished it myself. I think the breakwater is the only spot, no access to wharves these days.

ParticipantThe breakwater and area around it is the only place I know of but there could be others. Fishing with a sabiki type trace off the rocks you could expect to catch mullet, spotties, kahawai and the odd warehou and if casting out further you’ll probably get a lot of small dogfish. You can catch rig, school sharks, skate and possibly elephant fish as well. I’m sure there’s a lot of other species that could be caught there just need to put some time into fishing the area. Haven’t seen any red cod around but haven’t really tried catching them.
If targetting the rays you need a decent reel with at least a few hundred meters of 30lb + and a leader of 60lb plus to help landing it and also your line is bound to get dragged through a whole lot of weed so a long leader helps.
