ParticipantFurther to the last comments in the other pier ban thread, I’ve finally seen media confirmation of the ban being removed on page 15 in this weeks ‘Christchurch Mail’. Have a read.

ParticipantGood to hear
Probably thanks to the work you and other members have put in to protesting the ban, so thanks a lot.

ParticipantHi Zac
They’re going to have a review next year on how things go this summer. The council rangers seem to be paying more attention to the pier now, and it’s been quite tidy the last few times I’ve been there, so I’m optimistic that the ban won’t be in place for the summer of 2009/2010 either, but time will tell.
The battle was won when nearly all of the clueless bags that voted for the fishing ban didn’t make it onto the board when the local body elections took place. After that, common sense ruled. tracknz from here (Rob) did a great job of presenting our argument to the board.
Fight for your rights! Every little bit helps.

ParticipantJust shot down to the pier this arvo to see whats being caught. Pleased to see security on site and everyone abiding by the new rules after those idiots threatening each other with knives the other day (Both of whom have now been tresspassed the guard told me). Seems to be a much cleaner nicer place to fish now so long may it last. Nothing caught while I was there but reckon next weekend will be the time to start trying for a rig or 2.

ParticipantThere’s no chance of them leaving, they’ll rape and plunder and generally be ignorant and selfish when the guard isn’t around, and fall back to one line when the guard is around. They practically live down there. Personally I’d like to use them as crab or shark bait.

ParticipantHey all, been awhile.
At the risk of opening up old wounds, I took a walk along the pier today at 7:00am havent been there for a couple of years but was up early checked the tides & thought I’d have a look(took no rods). Could see a couple of bodies at the end with rods so went down to suss out what was being caught. Noticed all the signs stating ‘1 rod or handline, per person’ got too the end & found there were 2 people fishing with 4 rods, 3 handlines, & 1 of those crab thingies. 1 guy caught a decent sized Spiny while I was there which once landed proceed to writhe around & make a general mess of the guys tackle, which was meet with a swift stomp on the fishes head killing it! Once the line was untangled he threw it over the side. I know that the doggies are not most people ‘catch of choice’ but I cant help but think that its irresponsible fcukwits like these people that ruin it for others.
Who polices the rules that are in place?
What if any, are the penalties for blatant disregard of said rules?I was also most dissapointed to see all the vandalism, tagging & etching prevelant on/around the pier & NewBrighton in general, but thats an issue for another forum, I would throw the bastards off the end along with irresponsiblr fisherman!

ParticipantHi Guys. Unfortunately there are still a few arseholes pushing the boundaries down there. The council have a guard on duty over the weekends who is starting to make a bit of headway and there will be a few tresspass notices issued now too. The rangers are calling down there during the week but cant be there 24/7. That said if any of us see these people flaunting the rules then ring the number shown on the signs and ask for a ranger to come down. The council have said they will do their best to sort it out and if we can help them it is all good. If you have no joy there the Ranger pager number is 0262525093. This may even be the best # to call as a ranger will call you back and you can speak with them directly. I see Counciller Gail Sheriff is on her high horse again trying to have fishing off the pier banned completly and has had CTV down there videoing the asians with their multiple rods along with an artical in a local paper. Booger and myself have done our part in getting the ban lifted, it is now up too all of us to make sure that it stays that way.

Participantdamn those sort of people are bastards. Its a shame you arent allowed dogs on the pier.We discovered that most of the foreign fishers tend to stay well away from you if you have a mean looking dog with you.My mate was getting pissed with the asians coming and standing right next to him and casting their boat rods all over the show and causing all sorts of shit so he got his big ass ugly bully, mastiff mongrel looking thing and chained it up to a stake with a 10 metre chain. After that he had at least a 30metre radius of clear space right around him! no more tangles! Cant wait till my wee fella is all grown up
