Planning to be down in Canterbury this weekend (5th,6th and 7th). Main plan is to fish the Ashburton lakes. But hopping would get a few hours spare to target Elephant fish.
So I assume evening and dawn are the best time, or are they about doing the day?
Any particular beach fishing better then others at this time of year. Would probably base myself in the south of the city, assuming I do not camp at the lakes. Longterm forecast is for a dieing southerly on Saturday and fine wind (easterly?) on Sunday. Swellmap indicates half meters swells north of Banks, and 1-2m south.
Most success I’ve had with elephant fish is probably been late afternoon but never really been out much targetting them in the middle of the day. Sunrise/Sunset and after dark probably the best times. I’ve had good success at wakanui and dorie when they’re around but I’m pretty sure every other beach from birdlings to timaru would be about the same.
most elephant fish around timaru so far this season have been caught in the dark, using squid crab an prawn, sunrise an sunset can be good too, there is no rhyme or reason with them i have caught them at lunchtime, lots of glow sticks lying on the beach last week and some cow heads too.
id say sunrise either side of the rakaia mouth but at least 1-2 kms down from the river. its deep there and theres fish there. dads mate went out last weekend at about 4.30 in the morning and got 2 ellys and a rig on crab using 3/0 hooks
You’re staying in christchurch while you’re down? If the southern beaches arn’t looking good you could always spend a night at the pier or try round scarborough way.
Most likely would stay at Ashburton lakes, maybe Christchurch Saturday.
Looks like the only chance I would get would be Saturday night, and the forecast does not look good. Think I would abandon the plans to chase eles this trip.
