Ok I have heard of this being practised when people plan on eating a trout/salmon but have never done it myself [never felt the need as i find trout/salmon tastes good anyway] does it improve the flavour? Or make the fillets last longer?

Or any other benefits?

Lol wouldn’t want to do it in front of any little kids comin fishing, it MIGHT put them off fishing…

i javnt tried this myself either although i started to get sick of salmona while ago got ate too much lol. anyways i guess it could perhapps work. to bleed and gut the fish asap and then throw it on ice while fishing . i also remember when i was younger salmon fisherman down at the waimnak mouth used to catch a salmon and bury it in the dampish sand . guess to keep it cool and outa the sun or something

yeah when im fishing my mates dingy it leaks [we need to bail every 20 minutes] so i leave the fish in the water in the bottom, keeps it from going off.
or at least it keeps it looking good anyway.

Give it a try and see if you notice the difference. just grab the fish when its still alive and slit the throat, then allow the heart to squirt the blood away.

Whats the best [most humane] way to kill a trout/salmon I have most often just whacked it over the head with a nearby stone.
But I had a rather nasty incident where i bashed a decent rainbow on the head [really hard!] maybe 4-5 times still wasn’t dead and it isn’t exactly nice to the fish, I have heard of those, iki spike things where you stab the fish in the brain, any good on trout?

Hit them right between the eyes i say especially if they talk back, i have to do this on my kayak i put a towel over them to calm the fish down then guess where the head is and smack bang wollop dead is done then throw them in the back to lay in the water that sits in the back threw scupper holes keeps it nice and fresh.
Other option is just cut them below the gills (throat rip it out hell yeah)

If you want to bleed a fish you have to slit their throat while they are alive…

For other fish I stab them right between the eyes and into the brain.
