bait fishing near a river mouth

    just a query i seem to be getting and reading conflicting info on this subject online

    if im bait fising can i fish near a river mouth or do i need a licence im not targeting river fish ie trout salmon but if i was say white baiting can i cast a rod nearby for example ?

    I’m pretty sure that you can but if a Ranger talks to you I think you have to prove that you are not targeting Sports fish, eg If your using a surfcaster with bait and heavy line its pretty obvious your not targeting trout, but if your spinning with light gear it could be much harder to tell what you are targeting.

    You are allowed to, but avoid catching sport fishing, and any caught must be returned to the water as quickly as possible. Like troutfishernz suggested, use tackle which is less likely to catch sport fish.
