I was fishing in the kaiapoi river and noticed that quite a few people where using bait ( mostly pilchards ) under a float to catch salmon. Is this a effective way to catch salmon? I thought that salmon stop eating when they are in freshwater and they only take lures becouse they are aggressive and take a snap at them.

It’s a good post about this. Wailing I also have very little information about them.

they don’t take the pilchards because of hunger, its the same as fishing with a zeddie… annoyance when the pilchard gets in the way on its way past.

Salmon do not stop feeding when they enter the river.. They dont actively seek food because that wastes energy and there main goal is to get upriver as fast and safe as possible.. Any prey item that comes accross them they will take and any easy meal will be eaten.. Why would they. Turn down easy extra energy.. Salmon arent stupid they dont just snap at things out of anger if they completely shut down feeding none of us would catch them.. Dont. Beleive me,? Try catching a salmon in clean water with a dirty big old zeddy when. You can see them and they will avoid it like the plague even when. Brought strait across there nose. Thats why we do better when there is colour in the water. The fish dont see the lure that well and mistake it for a bait fish.. When. Its crystal clean the fishing is slow because they can see that big chunk of metal isnt food… But you can fool the odd fish with a more lifelike lure and liter line.. This is why only a small percentage of anglers do well.. A small percentage. Think about things more and dont listen to fallacys.. And the rest….. Well….

I thort salmon stop feeding when they hit fresh water from salt water.Their stomachs start to strink and they only go for lures in the river mouths or up river in aggression as in natures urg to sporn. They see lures coming at them in clear water from a distance and avoid them most of the time.Salmon only take when lures surprize them in slightly discolour water or in poor light.
So if they are are feeding while swimming up river at a fast rate, why are they loosing colour and slightly strinking at they go?
shark slayer, you got some good statements there,i thort id throw in some thorts too,to help us all understand our amazing salmon swim up the river.
Any one else welcome to put keyboard to above posts.

ive caught salmon in the lower opihi with there guts full of small bait fish so they defenitly feed at least in the surf and lower river.

I’ve seen someone catch two salmon within 20 mins on a heavy nymph, when the guys below him were using hardware.
He had the drift line right and was running it under their noses, and they definitely struck the nymphs as the indicator dipped.
Similar seems to go for soft baits.

they do stop feeding, the feeding continues in the tidal zone, and once in fresh the stomach begins to close.

the reflex to feed and strike a bait, lure is still there however.

Haha…. No they dont they stop ACTIVELY feeding but feed whenever the opportunity arises wich is less often as they move upriver and easy food becomes less available.. Hence the stomach shrinking.. If you got caught in the bush for a week and ate alot less food than normal your stomach would shrink also… Fish don’t. Go round snapping at everything because they cant help it its only for one thing.. FOOD! Kahawai are aggressive as fuck but cast a zeddie at them in crystal clear water uper gut and they ignore it cos they can see it aint food.. I have a cod spot that is ridiculously prolific.. Once a year for a month. They wont touch. A bait because they. Are. Exclusively. Targeting krill.. When fish really shut down feeding they Wont touch a thing.. If salmon shut down no one would. Catch them apart from foul hooked fish.. If you get a salmon you have fooled it into thinking its food. If they snapped at stuff at random none would. Spawn because. It would. Be so easy to catch em.

Fishhunter.. They lose condition and shrink as they go because they use more energy swimming upriver than they can get in food.. Spawning runs are there final struggle, a journey that is to taxing for them and is eventually there demise.. A fascinating species.. Searun trout do a similar journey and survive but some of them perish aswel.. A sight i have witnessed with my own eyes.. And no salmon dont avoid lures in clear water because they see it coming.. I have drifted lures tovthen in clear water they didnt see until it was right in front.. The response was total ignorance.. Zeddys that is.. More lifelike lures. However resulted in hookups. Or. Furious. Chasing until they saw me.. Metal lures do well in murky water cos they get a quick distorted look and mistake it for bait fish.

Fair comments guys, the salmon subject will never get boring.Good fishing for the next few days rivers coming right.
I too arrived just after the fly fishing guys landed 2 salmon out of 3 hook ups in gin clear water. Not as big as the monster trout they had been catching in the previus days.
