Re: Fishing in Marlborough Sounds

Fished the channel between the Rangitoto’s and Durville yesterday. It was extremely rough from the Chetwode’s to Durville with a fairlie big waves all chopped up.Would of been no place to take a boat under 8 metres but it did die down after lunchtime.Five of us aboard and we all got our limit of cod, good ones too.Alot of big Tarakihi, some of the biggest one’s Ive ever seen.A few Gurnard and two sevengillers and one snapper.I was keen on putting out a live bait under a balloon around the Rangitoto’s but the wind never let up so didnt bother. On the way back we stopped in Ketu for a dredge.30mins and two dredges later each of us had our 50 legal scallops.Obviously the commercial boys had’nt dredged there this year which can only be a good thing.
So as a report, all in all,the fishing outside the entrance to the Pelorus is real hot and the cod seem to be abundant and of goodsize. Not much info on the snapper front but we get atleast one every trip during snapper season no matter were we are.
