Yes, it is often best at night.

Many fish feed more often after dark and might even more in closer to the shore. Also the wind normally dies down and it becomes calmer.

All you need is a decent torch (I use a cheap headlamp from kathmandu) and maybe a tip-light for the end of your rod. I use MK.4 tip lights and just stuck it on with heaps of heavy duty sellotape.
