“This comprehensive guide to New Zealand trout flies is a handy, informative reference book detailing every artificial fly of note in the country. Its wide coverage of the full variety of lures and flies available in New Zealand has made it of immense value to anglers since it was first published in 1971. After a fascinating chapter on entomology for the angler, Keith Draper lists first of all Taupo and Canterbury lures, then wet and dry flies, and finally nymphs. Whenever possible the origin of the fly is given, along with the name of its designer and its “natural” – the item on the trout’s menu that first inspired it.

The author is a professional fly-tier whose angling experiences cover the whole of New Zealand. His Taupo-based company distributes hundreds of thousands of trout flies in New Zealand and abroad.

Keith Draper is also one of the country’s best-known angling writers, his books including the authoritative Angling in New Zealand.” All fly fisherman and fly tiers in New Zealand will be familiar with the writings of Keith Draper. Born in Hastings in 1932, he lived much of his life in Taupo. Keith grew up on the rivers of the Hawkes Bay, mainly fishing the Tukituki. Tying flies even as a boy, he later turned his hobby into a successful business becoming the managing director of a Taupo-based wholesale manufacturing company.

Some of his earlier titles included Mr Hundred Percent, Fred Fletcher’s Taupo Tales, Boy Fisherman, Duck Fever, Tie a Fly, Nymphs for all Seasons; and Angling in New Zealand.

Trout Flies in New Zealand by Keith Draper 1989 soft-cover edition.

Perhaps the one most remembered would be his best-selling Trout Flies in New Zealand first published in 1971, with numerous reprints. It went on to sell over 20,000 copies worldwide. Trout Flies in New Zealand is a comprehensive informative reference book detailing every artificial fly of note in New Zealand. My own copy has been pawed over endlessly over the years. Its pages have become grubby, and I have committed most of the text to memory! This book was later revised, updated, and expanded into New Zealand Trout Flies – Traditional and Modern published in 1997.

Also published in 1997 two little gems. These are Choose the Right Fly – A Streamside Guide for New Zealand Anglers, and Hooked on Fly-tying. These are “must-have” publications for anyone interested in flies and fly fishing. He published some 12 books in all on fishing and wildfowl hunting.

At one time he was president of the Taupo Fly Fishers’ Club and was on the national executive of the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association. He also started the Wildfowlers’ Association which lobbied on behalf of duck hunters.

Keith Draper died on 22 February 2000, at the age of 67.
